Usually continue gentle daily flossing, because bleeding often reflects inflamed gums that need plaque removal, but arrange an examination if it persists.

Blood from the gum edge commonly indicates gingivitis, where plaque irritates the gingival tissue. It can also follow flossing technique that cuts into the papilla, a dental cleaning, medication effects, or a less common bleeding disorder.

Use a soft brush and slide floss against each tooth in a C shape, moving below the gum edge without snapping it downward. Clean between every tooth once daily, and have hardened calculus removed because brushing and flossing cannot remove it.

Book a dental examination if bleeding continues after several days of careful cleaning, or if you have swollen gums, persistent bad breath, recession, loose teeth, or pus. Seek urgent medical help for heavy bleeding that does not stop, facial swelling affecting swallowing or breathing, or bleeding elsewhere.

Ask whether you have gingivitis or periodontitis, whether calculus is present, and whether your flossing method fits your contacts. Also ask if a brush, interdental cleaner, or medication review would improve plaque control.
