Why do my gums randomly bleed

Unprovoked gum bleeding is often caused by plaque-related inflammation, but trauma, medicines, infection, or another condition can contribute.

Gingiva normally fits closely around teeth. Plaque at the margin triggers inflammation, making the tissue swollen and prone to bleeding with minor contact.

Brush gently twice daily and clean between teeth every day, including the bleeding area unless cleaning causes severe pain.

Book an examination if bleeding recurs or comes with swelling, pus, loose teeth, or bad breath. Heavy bleeding or facial swelling needs urgent care.

Ask whether the problem is gingivitis or periodontitis, whether calculus is present, and whether medicines may contribute.
