Gum is swollen around tooth

Gum swelling around one tooth can come from trapped plaque, gum infection, decay, a cracked tooth, or an abscess.

The gum, periodontal ligament, root, and pulp can all cause pain or swelling near one tooth. A dentist checks the gum pocket, tooth surface, bite, pulp response, and nearby bone because the visible swelling does not identify the cause by itself.

Clean gently with a soft brush and floss if the contact is accessible, avoid pressing the swelling, and choose soft foods while arranging an examination. Do not place aspirin or concentrated chemicals on the gum.

Seek prompt care for pus, fever, facial swelling, worsening pain, a loose tooth, or difficulty opening the mouth. Go urgently for swelling that affects swallowing or breathing.

Ask whether the swelling comes from the gum pocket, a cavity, the root canal, a crack, or food impaction. Ask whether X-rays or pulp tests are needed and what treatment will remove the cause.
