Why my gum is red

Red gums commonly indicate inflammation from plaque, but trauma, hormonal changes, infection, or a local irritant can also cause redness.

Gum redness means the gingival tissue has increased blood flow and inflammation compared with its usual pale pink appearance.

Plaque at the gum margin can trigger gingivitis, while aggressive brushing, food impaction, tobacco, mouth breathing, orthodontic appliances, or a poorly fitting restoration can irritate one area.

Brush gently along the gumline with a soft brush and clean between the teeth daily. Do not scrub harder or avoid the area completely, because retained plaque can prolong inflammation.

Book a dental examination if redness lasts, bleeds often, swells, recedes, or is accompanied by loose teeth, pus, bad breath, or pain.
