Baking soda can help remove some surface stain, but mixing extra powder into toothpaste does not bleach the inner tooth colour.

Sodium bicarbonate is a mild alkaline abrasive used in some formulated toothpastes. It can polish deposits on the outer enamel, while intrinsic colour from dentine, trauma, or medication needs a different assessment.

Use a fluoride toothpaste as directed instead of altering the formula, and brush gently with a soft brush. Do not scrub harder to chase a lighter shade, because abrasion and gum recession can make teeth look more uneven and sensitive.

Seek care for pain, translucent or worn enamel, gum recession, or a white or brown patch that does not brush away. A professional can distinguish stain from enamel or dentine changes.
