A lower third molar may emerge through the gum at an angle or only partly, leaving an operculum over its crown. Tenderness, swelling, bad taste, bleeding, jaw stiffness, and pain on chewing can result when bacteria collect beneath it.
How can you keep an inflamed wisdom tooth clean?
Keep the area as clean as possible with a small soft brush and gentle rinsing, and choose softer foods temporarily. Do not probe beneath the gum flap with sharp objects or use leftover antibiotics; a dentist may irrigate the pocket and treat the tooth or surrounding tissue.
When does wisdom-tooth swelling need prompt care?
Arrange prompt dental care for recurrent swelling, pus, fever, worsening pain, or difficulty opening the mouth. Facial or neck swelling and difficulty swallowing or breathing are urgent symptoms requiring immediate care.
