Water flosser makes gums bleed

Bleeding with a water flosser can happen when gums are inflamed or the jet is used too forcefully; persistent bleeding needs a gum examination.

Plaque at the gum margin can trigger gingival inflammation, making tissue bleed when cleaned. A high pressure setting, a tip held too close, or a recently injured gum can also contribute.

Start at a low setting, aim along the gumline rather than into the tissue, and move the tip slowly around each tooth. Clean daily and note whether bleeding and swelling are improving.

Arrange a dental visit for bleeding that persists, spontaneous bleeding, bad taste, loose teeth, recession, or facial swelling.

Ask whether plaque, calculus, periodontal pockets, a bleeding disorder, or medication could explain the symptom and which tip and pressure are appropriate.
