Sore swollen gum around one tooth

A localized sore swollen gum usually points to trapped food, a pocket, eruption or infection near one tooth.

The dentist probes beside the tooth, tests its pulp, checks the bite and takes an image when needed. A bump near the root may drain an abscess.

Brush and clean between teeth gently if comfortable, avoid sharp tools and squeezing, chew elsewhere and arrange examination.

See a dentist if swelling persists, recurs, produces pus or causes toothache; fever, spreading swelling or difficulty opening, swallowing or breathing requires urgent care.

Ask whether the gum, pulp, root or bone is involved, whether imaging is needed, and which treatment removes the cause.
