Red and sore gum around one tooth

A red, sore gum around one tooth can come from trapped plaque, food, trauma, a deep gum pocket, decay, or infection near the tooth.

The tissue around a tooth includes the marginal gingiva and the periodontal attachment beneath it. Local inflammation may begin at the gum edge, while a pocket, cracked tooth, root infection, or erupting wisdom tooth can cause deeper tenderness.

Clean gently with a soft brush and floss or use an interdental brush if it can pass without force. Do not place aspirin, concentrated oils, or caustic substances on the gum.

Seek prompt care if the area produces pus, the tooth hurts on biting, swelling spreads, fever develops, or the gum remains sore after careful cleaning.

Ask whether the problem is superficial gingivitis, a periodontal pocket, decay, a crack, or an infection at the root, and whether probing or an X-ray is needed.
