Peroxide breaks down stain molecules within enamel and dentine. It does not recolour porcelain, composite resin, crowns, or fillings, and the outcome differs when discolouration comes from trauma, medication, fluorosis, or enamel defects.

The clinical process usually includes an examination, cleaning if deposits are present, shade documentation, gum protection, gel placement, and post-treatment instructions. Tell the dentist about sensitivity, pregnancy, decay, gum recession, and existing restorations.

Seek dental care before whitening if teeth hurt, gums bleed, a tooth has darkened, or you have untreated decay. Contact the clinic if pain persists after treatment or if gel has caused a significant gum burn.

Ask whether the colour change is external or internal, whether restorations will match afterward, and whether custom trays or in-clinic treatment fit your needs. Ask how sensitivity will be managed and when a review is needed.
