Pola Smile is a professional take-home whitening system using peroxide gel in custom trays to lighten natural tooth enamel.

The treatment uses a peroxide such as carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide to break down stain molecules within enamel and dentine. It changes the colour of natural teeth, but not crowns, veneers, fillings, or other restorations.

Have a dental examination before whitening so decay, leaking fillings, gum inflammation, and exposed root surfaces can be addressed. Use only the prescribed amount of gel, keep it off the gums, and follow the tray schedule; temporary sensitivity can be managed by spacing applications or using a desensitising product recommended for you.

Arrange an examination if whitening causes persistent pain, marked gum irritation, or uneven colour that does not settle. A dentist should also assess a dark single tooth, because internal discoloration may need root-canal assessment rather than external whitening.

Ask whether your stains are surface or internal, which peroxide concentration and tray design fit your teeth, and how existing restorations will look beside the whitened enamel. Also ask how sensitivity will be prevented and when a shade review is needed.
