Pimple like bump on gum

A pimple-like bump on the gum is often a draining sinus tract from a tooth infection, although gum irritation or a blocked gland can look similar.

A raised spot on the gum may be a parulis, also called a gum boil, where fluid from an infected tooth or gum pocket reaches the surface. It can shrink after draining while the infection remains around the tooth root.

Do not squeeze or pierce the bump. Brush gently, rinse with warm salt water, and arrange an examination with dental X-rays so the tooth, pulp, root tip, and surrounding bone can be assessed.

Seek prompt care for facial swelling, fever, worsening pain, difficulty swallowing or breathing, or swelling near the eye. Even without those signs, a bump that persists or returns needs a dental examination.

Could the bump come from a cracked tooth? Is the tooth nerve infected? Will treatment require drainage, root canal treatment, gum treatment, or removal of the tooth?
