Whitening gel contains a peroxide compound that moves through enamel and dentine to break down some stain molecules. Custom trays hold the gel against the tooth surfaces while limiting contact with the gums.

It changes the colour of natural tooth structure, but it does not whiten fillings, crowns, veneers, or other restorations. The starting shade also depends on intrinsic tooth colour and the type of staining.

Have a dentist examine decay, cracked teeth, leaking restorations, gum inflammation, and existing sensitivity before whitening. Follow the supplied schedule, place only the directed amount of gel in each tray space, and wipe away excess from the gumline.

Pause and contact the dental team if you develop significant sensitivity, burning gums, ulceration, or a tray that cuts the tissue. Keep gel away from children and store it according to the product instructions.

Arrange an assessment before whitening if a tooth hurts, a filling is loose, a gum is bleeding, or a dark tooth has changed colour. Pain or a single grey tooth can indicate a problem inside the tooth rather than surface staining.

Seek review when sensitivity does not settle after stopping the gel or when the gums remain pale, sore, or inflamed.
