The tray is shaped to keep gel on the front and side surfaces of the teeth. It does not whiten fillings, crowns, veneers, or other tooth-coloured restorations, so existing dental work may remain a different shade.

A dentist first checks for decay, leaking fillings, gum inflammation, exposed root surfaces, and the cause of the discoloration. If whitening is appropriate, follow the prescribed gel amount and wear schedule, keep gel off the gums, and stop if marked irritation or pain develops.

Arrange an examination before using it if you have toothache, untreated decay, bleeding or inflamed gums, cracked teeth, or unexplained darkening of one tooth. Seek prompt care for swelling, fever, or severe pain rather than trying to whiten through those symptoms.
