A topical oral anaesthetic may briefly numb sore mouth tissue, but it cannot treat the dental cause of tooth or gum pain.

Orajel is a brand of topical oral pain medicine, commonly containing benzocaine in some formulations. It acts locally on surface nerve endings, so any relief is temporary and does not reach decay, an abscess, or an inflamed tooth nerve.

Read the product directions, use only a small amount on the affected surface, and avoid placing it into a deep cavity or swallowing it. Keep brushing gently, avoid very hot foods, and do not combine products with the same anaesthetic ingredient.

Arrange prompt dental care for pain that persists, returns after numbness fades, or comes with swelling, fever, a bad taste, a broken tooth, or difficulty opening the mouth. Facial swelling or trouble breathing or swallowing needs emergency medical attention.

Ask whether the pain comes from decay, a cracked tooth, gum inflammation, or infection, and whether an examination or dental X-ray is needed. Ask which pain medicine is suitable for your medical history and how long topical relief should be used.
