Teeth hurt and gums bleeding

Painful teeth with bleeding gums can reflect decay, a cracked tooth, gum inflammation, or an abscess and need a focused examination.

Tooth pain can arise from dentine, pulp, a crack, trauma, or tissues around the root. Bleeding commonly reflects inflamed gingiva but can accompany a local abscess.

Use gentle oral hygiene, clean between the teeth, and avoid caustic substances or forceful manipulation. A dentist can examine the tissues, test the teeth, and use imaging when it answers a specific clinical question.

Arrange care for persistent or worsening symptoms, swelling, pus, fever, a broken or loose tooth, or an unexplained dark area. Difficulty breathing or swallowing and rapidly spreading facial swelling require urgent help.
