A deep gum cleaning removes bacterial deposits from tooth surfaces below the gumline when inflammation or periodontal pockets are present.

A deep cleaning usually means scaling and root planing, a periodontal treatment rather than an ordinary polish. Instruments or ultrasonic tips remove calculus and biofilm from the crown and root surfaces, and the root surface may be smoothed so the gum can heal against it.
