Gum sore around molar

A sore gum around a molar can result from trapped food, gingivitis, a cavity, a cracked tooth, or inflammation around a partially erupted wisdom tooth.

The molar area may be irritated by plaque, calculus, food impaction, decay near the gumline, a sharp filling edge, or an infection around the tooth or its root. The exact source depends on the gum, tooth, and surrounding bone.

Rinse gently with warm water, brush the area carefully, and floss or use an interdental brush if it can be done without forcing the tissue. Avoid chewing hard foods on that side.

Arrange prompt care for worsening pain, swelling, pus, fever, bad taste, limited mouth opening, or difficulty swallowing. Facial swelling or breathing difficulty requires emergency care.

Ask whether the problem is in the gum, the molar pulp, the root, or a wisdom-tooth flap, and whether an examination or radiograph is needed.
