Gum interproximal brush

An interdental brush is a small wire or elastomer-supported brush that cleans plaque from spaces between teeth and along the gum line.

Interdental brushes are useful where there is enough space for the brush to pass, including around bridges, braces, and some gum-recession areas. Floss or tape may suit tight contacts.

Start with a size that passes without force and move it gently in and out once or twice. Use a separate size where gaps differ, and replace a bent or worn brush.

Bleeding that does not settle with improved plaque removal, or pain and swelling around a gap, warrants an examination.

Ask which sizes fit each area and whether an interdental brush, floss, water irrigator, or combination is appropriate.
