Floss everyday but gums still bleed

Bleeding usually signals inflammation in the gingiva, where plaque bacteria collect at the gum margin and between teeth. Daily flossing helps, but it may not reach every surface, remove hardened calculus, or address an overhanging filling, gum pocket, recession, or infection. The dentist or hygienist checks plaque, calculus, pocket depth, gum attachment, tooth contacts, restoration margins, and signs of decay. A history of medicines, smoking, diabetes, pregnancy, or bleeding elsewhere may also change the assessment.

Use a gentle sawing motion to guide floss through the contact, curve it around each tooth in a C shape, and move below the gum margin without forcing it. If spaces are open, an appropriately sized interdental brush may clean them more effectively than floss alone.

Arrange an examination if bleeding persists after careful cleaning, occurs without brushing, or comes with swelling, bad breath, loose teeth, pus, or pain. Heavy bleeding or facial swelling needs urgent care.

Ask whether the bleeding is plaque-induced gingivitis, periodontitis, trauma, or a tooth-related problem. Ask which interdental size, brushing method, professional cleaning, and follow-up interval fit your gums.
