How do plaque acids cause tooth decay?
Decay is a disease process in which acids produced by plaque bacteria remove minerals from enamel and dentine. If the tooth surface breaks down, the cavity can deepen toward the pulp, the living tissue containing nerves and blood vessels.
What can you do to slow or prevent decay?
Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, clean between teeth, limit frequent sugary or acidic exposures, and attend examinations so early lesions can be assessed. A dentist may use visual inspection, drying, bitewing radiographs, or other tests to determine the depth.
When do decay symptoms need prompt dental care?
Seek care for pain, sensitivity that lingers, a visible hole, food trapping, a dark or soft area, swelling, or a broken tooth. Facial swelling, fever, or difficulty swallowing needs urgent assessment.
