A whitening strip is a thin plastic carrier that holds bleaching gel against enamel for a defined wear period. It is intended for natural teeth and cannot recolour tooth-coloured restorations.

Sensitivity can occur when peroxide reaches dentine through microscopic pathways or when gel contacts the gums. Existing cavities, gum recession, enamel defects, cracks, and heavily stained restorations can change the result and the level of irritation.

Peroxide whitening strips can lighten natural enamel but do not change the shade of dental restorations.

Read the active ingredient and wear instructions, keep the gel away from the gum margin, and stop when sensitivity or burning develops. A dental cleaning can remove plaque and some external stain before a whitening decision.

Keep a record of changes and bring the product, appliance, or medication list to the appointment so the clinician can assess the relevant details.

Have a dentist assess pain, a single dark tooth, gum recession, cavities, cracks, or a reaction that persists after stopping. Urgent care is appropriate for swelling, severe pain, or facial symptoms.

Do not delay assessment when symptoms are escalating, recurring, or affecting eating, sleep, mouth opening, breathing, or swallowing.

Ask whether the product is appropriate for your enamel, what will happen to existing restorations, and whether a cavity or gum problem should be treated before whitening.
