Clove oil abscess

Clove oil may temporarily numb an abscessed tooth, but it cannot remove the infection, drain pus, or replace dental treatment.

A dental abscess is a collection of infected material caused by bacteria entering the pulp or tissues around a tooth. Eugenol in clove oil can produce a local numbing sensation, but it does not eliminate bacteria from a root canal or dental abscess.

Do not place concentrated oil against the gum or swallow it. Rinse gently, keep the area clean, use ordinary pain relief only as directed for you, and arrange an urgent dental examination; treatment may involve drainage, root canal treatment, or extraction.

Seek urgent care for facial swelling, fever, worsening pain, pus, difficulty opening the mouth, or feeling unwell. Go to emergency medical care for difficulty breathing or swallowing or swelling spreading toward the eye or neck.

Ask where the infection is located, whether the tooth can be restored, and whether drainage, root canal treatment, extraction, or antibiotics is indicated. Ask what symptoms mean the infection is spreading.
