Bulk composite

Bulk-fill composite is a tooth-coloured resin placed in thicker increments when the cavity and curing conditions suit it.

The term refers to composite resin formulated with fillers and photoinitiators that allow a deeper increment to be cured with a dental light. It is used for selected cavities, not as a universal replacement for every restorative technique.

The dentist removes infected or weakened tooth structure, isolates the tooth, selects a shade, applies adhesive, places the composite in an appropriate increment, light-cures it, shapes the anatomy, and checks the bite. The choice depends on cavity depth, moisture control, remaining enamel, and chewing forces.

Book an examination when a filling is fractured, sensitive, catches floss, or causes pain on biting. Urgent care is needed for facial swelling, fever, or difficulty swallowing or breathing.

Ask whether bulk-fill composite suits the cavity depth, which adhesive and composite system will be used, how the bite will be adjusted, and what signs would mean the filling needs review.
