The short answer
Teething discomfort is related to a developing primary tooth moving through the gum, which can make the gum locally tender and swollen. A product marketed for teething does not diagnose fever, dehydration, infection, or another illness.
Why can an erupting tooth make a child irritable?
The erupting tooth creates pressure in the gingival tissue and may lead to chewing, drooling, and irritability. A high fever, breathing problem, widespread rash, persistent diarrhea, or marked lethargy needs medical assessment rather than being attributed automatically to teething.
What can soothe your child’s tender teething gum?
Offer a clean, cool teething ring and gently massage the gum with a clean finger. Follow the child’s clinician or product instructions for any medicine, and avoid objects that can splinter, choke, or injure the mouth.
When is teething discomfort a reason to seek care?
Seek dental or medical care for severe swelling, pus, persistent refusal to drink, dehydration, breathing difficulty, or a child who appears very unwell. A dentist can check eruption and rule out an oral lesion or infection.
