Floss slides through the contact point and curves around each tooth to clean the sulcus under the gum edge. Snapping it into the gums can cause a small injury, while calculus cannot be removed by floss.

Guide the floss gently through the contact, hug one tooth in a C shape, then clean the adjacent tooth. Use an interdental brush or water flosser when tooth spacing or orthodontic appliances make floss difficult.
