Dental bleaching procedure

Dental bleaching lightens natural tooth colour by placing a peroxide gel on the tooth surface under controlled conditions.

The active materials are usually hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide, which break down stain molecules within enamel and dentin. Restorations do not bleach, so their colour is assessed first.

The dentist examines teeth and gums, treats active disease, records shade, protects soft tissues, and applies timed gel cycles. Custom trays deliver measured gel at home as instructed.

Ask for an examination before bleaching if you have cavities, inflammation, leaking restorations, recession, or strong sensitivity. Stop for severe pain or chemical irritation.
