Why can gingivitis make gums red, swollen, and tender?
Gingivitis causes red, swollen, tender gums that may bleed with brushing because plaque irritates the gingival margin. Generalized soreness can also follow vigorous brushing, a new oral product, mouth breathing, burns, or viral illness. The dentist looks for plaque, calculus, recession, ulcers, fungal changes, dry mucosa, and signs that pain comes from teeth rather than gums.
How should healthy gum tissue feel and fit around teeth?
Healthy gingiva is attached around teeth and forms a seal at the gingival margin. Inflammation makes this tissue more vascular and sensitive; advanced periodontal disease can damage attachment and supporting bone. Pain in every area is not always a gum disease symptom, so the history of onset, medicines, diet, and other body symptoms matters.
What can you do now to soothe widespread gum soreness?
Use a soft brush with gentle pressure, clean between teeth carefully, drink water, and stop any new product that burns the mouth. Do not smoke or place aspirin, alcohol, or concentrated peroxide on the gums. A dental cleaning may remove calculus that brushing cannot, followed by individualized home-care instruction; ulcers or dry mouth may need a different approach.
When should persistent or widespread gum pain be examined?
Book an examination for bleeding, swelling, bad breath, recession, loose teeth, persistent ulcers, or soreness that does not settle. Seek urgent help for facial swelling, fever, or trouble swallowing or breathing. Tell the clinician about new medicines, pregnancy, diabetes, immune conditions, and recent illness because they can change the assessment.
