Clove and clove oil contain eugenol, a compound used in some dental materials for its local soothing effect, but applying it at home cannot repair decay, seal a crack or remove an infection.
How can eugenol temporarily change sensation in the mouth?
Eugenol can affect exposed nerve endings and may produce temporary numbness or warmth. Whole cloves, clove powder and concentrated oil differ in strength, and contact with gums, lips or the tongue can irritate tissue or cause a chemical injury.
How can you use clove products more safely at home?
If you use a clove product, avoid swallowing concentrated oil and keep it away from children; stop if burning, rash, swelling or worsening pain occurs. Rinse gently, use ordinary oral hygiene, and arrange an examination to identify decay, pulp inflammation, a crack or gum disease.

Seek dental care for pain that persists, returns after the numbness fades, or comes with swelling, fever, drainage or a broken tooth. Get urgent help for facial swelling or trouble breathing or swallowing.
