Clove or clove oil may briefly numb toothache, but it does not treat decay, a damaged pulp, or an infection and can irritate oral tissues.

Clove contains eugenol, a compound used in some dental materials for its temporary soothing and analgesic properties. Applied directly or in concentrated oil, it can burn or inflame the gum and lining of the mouth, and swallowing it can cause problems.

Toothache usually reflects a structural or inflammatory problem such as decay, pulp inflammation, a crack, exposed dentin, or gum disease. Numbing the area does not repair that cause.

Do not pack clove or undiluted clove oil into a cavity or against the gum. Rinse gently, keep the area clean, avoid triggers, and use label-directed pain relief if appropriate for you while arranging an examination.

Seek prompt care for pain lasting beyond a brief episode, swelling, fever, pus, or difficulty opening the mouth. Get emergency help for swelling near the eye or neck, or trouble swallowing or breathing.
