Clove oil may briefly numb tooth pain, but it does not treat decay, a crack, or an infection.

Clove oil contains eugenol, a compound that can reduce local nerve sensation for a short time. Dental pain usually comes from inflamed pulp, exposed dentine, a gum problem, or infection, so numbing the area does not remove its cause. A whole clove and clove oil are different preparations, and concentrated oil can irritate or burn gum tissue. Pain that returns after the numbness fades can signal inflammation inside the tooth or an abscess near the root.

Keep the area clean with a soft brush and rinse gently with warm water. Do not place undiluted oil against the gum, pack a cavity with household materials, or use clove as a substitute for an examination; a dentist may remove decay, seal a crack, drain infection, or treat the pulp depending on the findings.

Arrange dental care promptly if pain lasts, recurs, is triggered by heat or cold, or makes chewing difficult. Seek urgent help for facial swelling, fever, trouble swallowing or breathing, or swelling that reaches the eye or neck.
