Clove oil contains eugenol and may temporarily numb an area, but it does not remove decay or treat the cause of dental pain.

Eugenol can reduce sensation on contacted tissues and is also used in some dental materials. Concentrated oil can irritate or burn oral mucosa, and swallowing it can cause problems, especially in children.

Pain from decay, a cracked tooth, pulp inflammation, or an abscess requires diagnosis and dental treatment. A temporary change in pain does not show that the tooth has healed.

Avoid placing concentrated oil in a cavity or holding it against the gum. Rinse away contact, keep it away from children, and use only a clinician-directed dental preparation.

Seek urgent care for facial swelling, fever, pus, difficulty swallowing, or difficulty breathing. Ask what structure is causing pain and whether restoration, root canal treatment, or removal is needed.
