How can you temporarily reduce pain from tooth decay?

Cavity pain is reduced temporarily by avoiding triggers and using an appropriate labelled pain reliever, but decay needs dental treatment.

How can decay irritate the pulp inside a tooth?

Decay removes mineral from enamel and dentin; irritation can reach the pulp, the nerve and blood-vessel tissue inside the tooth.

What can you do safely while arranging dental treatment?

Rinse, brush gently, clean between teeth, and avoid putting aspirin or chemicals on the gum. A dentist removes decay and places a restoration, or treats the pulp when necessary.

Which decay symptoms need prompt dental attention?

Persistent pain, night pain, swelling, fever, pus, or difficulty opening the mouth needs prompt care. Breathing or swallowing difficulty is urgent.

Could the pulp need treatment or a root canal?

Ask whether the pulp is irritated or infected, which restoration is needed, and whether a root canal is indicated.
