White tongue and burning mouth

The tongue may look white when debris, keratin, bacteria, or fungal material collects on its surface. Burning can involve the tongue, lips, or palate and may occur with dryness, altered taste, reflux, irritants, medication effects, or nerve-related pain.

Drink water regularly, brush the tongue gently without scraping aggressively, avoid tobacco and irritating mouth products, and review new medicines with a clinician rather than stopping them yourself. A dentist may inspect the mucosa, assess saliva, review medical history, and test or treat suspected oral thrush.

Arrange an examination for a coating that cannot be wiped away, burning that persists, soreness, cracks, bleeding, swallowing difficulty, or unexplained taste change. Prompt care is needed for rapidly spreading mouth swelling or breathing difficulty.

Ask whether the coating is removable, whether the tissue suggests thrush or another condition, how dry mouth or medicines may contribute, and whether testing or treatment is needed.
