How to reduce gum swelling after braces

Gum swelling after braces usually reflects plaque around brackets or temporary irritation and improves when the gumline is cleaned.

Swelling that persists can progress from gingivitis to attachment and bone damage, especially when gum inflammation is not controlled. A loose appliance, overhanging material, mouth breathing, medicines, or an unrelated infection can also contribute.

Brush around every bracket with a soft brush, clean under the wire with an interdental brush, and follow the orthodontist’s cleaning instructions. Rinse with water after meals, avoid snapping floss against the gums, and contact the orthodontic clinic if a wire is rubbing or a bracket is loose.

Arrange an appointment for persistent swelling, spontaneous bleeding, pus, bad taste, gum recession, or pain around one tooth. Seek urgent care for facial swelling, fever, or difficulty swallowing or breathing.
