Plaque is a bacterial film that collects around brackets, bands, and the gum margin. Its inflammatory response makes gingiva red, puffy, and prone to bleeding; bleeding is not a reason to stop cleaning.

Use a soft toothbrush around each bracket, an interdental brush under the wire, and fluoride toothpaste as directed. Clean around attachments or elastics, keep orthodontic visits, and report appliances that rub the gum.
