Types of braces for adults

Adults may be treated with metal fixed braces, ceramic fixed braces, lingual braces, or clear aligners.

Brackets and wires, or removable trays and attachments, apply controlled force to move teeth through supporting bone. Suitability depends on bite complexity, gum health, restorations, and cooperation.

Have an orthodontic examination, clean around appliances carefully, and keep retainers after active movement.

Seek care promptly for facial swelling, fever, pus, severe or worsening pain, persistent bleeding, or difficulty breathing or swallowing. A dentist can examine the tissues, identify the cause, and provide treatment such as cleaning, restoration, drainage, or review of an appliance.

Ask what caused the symptom, which examination or imaging is needed, what treatment is appropriate, and which changes require urgent review.
