Braces move teeth with controlled force, and the best type depends on the bite, tooth position, hygiene, and treatment goals.

Orthodontic braces can be fixed or removable. Metal or ceramic brackets attach to teeth and hold an archwire, while clear aligners use a sequence of custom trays; retainers maintain the result afterward.

An orthodontist examines the teeth and jaws, records photographs and X-rays when indicated, and checks the bite before selecting an appliance. Treatment then involves planned adjustments or tray changes, followed by retention.

Seek an orthodontic assessment when teeth are crowded, spaced, rotated, difficult to clean, or when the upper and lower teeth do not meet comfortably. Facial growth and jaw concerns also warrant assessment.

Ask which tooth movements are needed, whether a fixed appliance or aligners can deliver them, how cleaning will work, and what retainer plan follows treatment.
