Metal braces white

White marks around metal braces usually represent enamel demineralisation from plaque retained around brackets.

A bracket creates edges where plaque and food remain. Bacterial acids lower local pH and draw minerals from enamel, producing chalky lesions near bracket margins.

Brush around every bracket with fluoride toothpaste, clean beneath the archwire with an interdental brush, and follow orthodontic fluoride instructions. Do not scrape the marks.

Tell the orthodontic team if a mark enlarges, feels rough, or causes sensitivity or pain.

Ask whether the marks are active demineralisation, how to clean the area, and whether extra fluoride or restorative treatment is indicated.
