Braces with rubber bands colors

The coloured rubber bands on braces are elastic ligatures that hold the archwire in each bracket, and their colour is mainly a personal choice.

The answer depends on the clinical finding and the treatment that addresses it.

Fixed braces use brackets bonded to teeth and an archwire that applies controlled force. Small elastic ligatures, often called coloured bands, fit around individual brackets to retain the wire; they are different from interarch elastics that connect upper and lower teeth.

Choose a colour at adjustment visits and clean around each bracket with an orthodontic brush, fluoride toothpaste, and interdental aids. Avoid hard or sticky foods that can dislodge brackets, and contact the orthodontic team if a band is lost or a wire is poking.

Contact the orthodontist if a bracket detaches, the wire cuts the cheek, several ligatures come off, or pain is severe or accompanied by swelling. Do not try to bend or remove orthodontic components yourself.

Ask which ligatures your appliance uses, how often they are changed, and which foods or cleaning tools affect them. Clarify whether any elastic bands prescribed between the jaws have a bite-correction purpose and how they should be worn.
