Blister on gum that won t go away

A gum blister that does not heal can be a draining dental abscess, a traumatic sore, or another oral lesion, so its cause needs examination.

A persistent gum blister is a raised fluid-filled or swollen area on the gingiva. A tooth infection may create a sinus tract that drains through the gum, while biting injury or an ulcer can affect the surface.

Do not pop or squeeze it. Brush gently, rinse with warm salt water for comfort, and arrange an examination so the dentist can test the tooth, gums, and possibly take an X-ray.

Seek prompt care if it persists, returns, drains pus, or comes with toothache, swelling, fever, bad taste, or pain when biting. Facial swelling or difficulty swallowing or breathing needs urgent attention.

Ask whether it is connected to a tooth root, gum pocket, trauma, or another lesion, and whether treatment may require drainage, a filling, root canal treatment, extraction, or tissue sampling.
