Gum bleeds easily

Gums that bleed easily are commonly inflamed by plaque at the gumline, but bleeding can also reflect trauma, medication effects, or a wider health problem.

Bleeding during brushing or flossing often occurs when gingival tissue is swollen and its small blood vessels are easier to disturb. Plaque that remains around the teeth can harden into calculus, which a toothbrush cannot remove.

Use a soft toothbrush, clean between the teeth daily, and avoid stopping gentle cleaning because of light bleeding. A dentist or hygienist can measure gum pockets and remove calculus with professional instruments.

Arrange dental care when bleeding persists, is spontaneous or heavy, or comes with swelling, pus, bad taste, loose teeth, or pain. Seek urgent medical help for bleeding that will not stop or occurs with unusual bruising.
