Bleeding gums most often reflect inflammation from plaque, but trauma, gum disease, medicines, and medical conditions can also contribute.

Healthy gingiva is firm and does not usually bleed with gentle brushing or flossing. Plaque at the gum margin triggers an inflammatory response, making the tissue red, swollen, tender, and more likely to bleed. Common contributors include irregular plaque removal, calculus, smoking, hormonal changes, ill-fitting dental work, vigorous brushing, and some medicines or systemic conditions. Bleeding from one spot may have a local cause such as trapped food, decay, or a sharp restoration.

Brush twice daily with a soft brush and clean between teeth gently every day, directing the bristles toward the gum margin. Arrange a professional examination and cleaning when hardened calculus is present, because a toothbrush cannot remove calculus from the tooth surface.

Seek dental care when bleeding is repeated, spontaneous, heavy, or accompanied by swelling, pus, pain, bad breath, or loose teeth. Medical assessment is also appropriate when bleeding occurs in other body sites, bruising is unusual, or a new medicine may be involved.
