How is an inner-mouth bite different from a tooth infection?
This is different from a tooth infection, although a wound can become irritated if it is repeatedly bitten. A rough filling, sharp tooth edge, denture, or orthodontic bracket may keep injuring the same spot.
What first aid can reduce bleeding and swelling after a bite?
Rinse gently with cool water, apply clean gauze with steady pressure for bleeding, and use cool fluids or a cold pack on the outside of the cheek for swelling. Choose soft foods and avoid tobacco, alcohol, and sharp foods while it heals.
When does an inner-mouth bite need urgent dental or medical care?
Arrange dental or medical care for persistent bleeding, a deep or gaping cut, worsening pain, increasing swelling, pus, fever, numbness, or difficulty opening the mouth, eating, or swallowing.
What should you ask about repeated trauma to the mouth wound?
Ask whether a tooth edge, filling, denture, or brace is causing repeat trauma and whether the wound needs closure or an examination for another lesion.
