Resin-Based Root Canal Sealer

Epoxy resin sealers have good flow, thin film thickness, low solubility, dimensional stability, sealing capacity and radiopacity. They also adhere to dentin and show low toxicity with some antibacterial effects.

These sealers are used with a core to obturate the root-canal system. Correct obturation with the core and cement is essential to the success of endodontic treatment.

Calcium-silicate-based sealers are a material alternative to resin-based sealers. The literature treats resin and calcium-silicate sealers as separate sealer groups for comparison.

For a patient, the sealer is one part of root-canal filling rather than the whole treatment. Its role is to seal around the core after the canal has been prepared.

Epoxy resin sealers have low toxicity and some antibacterial effects, but their main material limitation is a lack of bioactivity and biomineralisation capability. Long-term evidence is limited for some newer products.
